Tokyo, Japan - In a significant development for Japan's telecommunications industry, the Japanese government announced on Monday its decision to allocate frequency slots in the highly sought-after platinum band to Rakuten Mobile. This move aims to enable the burgeoning carrier to expand and enhance its 4G network.
Rakuten Mobile has faced challenges related to its mobile connectivity since its launch in 2020, which has affected its reputation. The allocated 700MHz slots are expected to mitigate interference and bolster network coverage. Industry experts view this allocation as a crucial step in helping Rakuten Mobile achieve profitability and compete more effectively with its larger rivals, including NTT Docomo, KDDI, and SoftBank.
Rakuten Mobile plans to roll out platinum band services as early as March 2026, with the goal of achieving overall profitability by the end of that fiscal year, in line with its ministry approved base station plan. Currently, the carrier leases 800MHz spectrum from KDDI.
The Radio Regulatory Council granted approval to Rakuten Mobile's allocation request on Monday. Previously, platinum band slots in the 700-900MHz range were exclusively held by the "Big Three" incumbent carriers.
Kazuhiro Suzuki, Co-CEO of Rakuten Mobile, expressed excitement about the new spectrum, stating that it will enable the company to significantly enhance its services starting in the coming year. Originally, the company had aimed to enable platinum band usage in 2022.
This government decision opens doors for Rakuten Mobile to improve its performance, addressing its past struggles with sluggish subscriber growth. Although challenges persist, experts see access to the platinum band as a potential game-changer for the upstart carrier.
